College Athletics

When the air starts to cool and the leaves start to turn, one of the many things this means is that the college athletics season is about to start. College athletic usually starts with the mighty football season. Soon after the major games are played on the football field the attention shifts to the basketball court. The Michael Jordan’s and Magic Johnson’s all got their start playing college athletics.

For those is the frozen states of the north, college athletics really gets going in the brutal winter months. Ice hockey is one of the hottest tickets going at this time of the year. Finally when spring rolls around the attention shifts once more. This time it is to the grassy fields for baseball and track and field. There are of course several other sports that college athletic covers. Many schools have swim teams, lacrosse, soccer, tennis the list goes on.

College athletics in recent years has brought with it its own problems and controversies. One of the longest running debates is college athletics Vs academics. Players in many cases get cut a lot of slack when it comes to their studies. It is true that they must keep to a rigorous schedule; however some colleges and universities have been accused of letting things slip to far. Rumors are always about of athletes paying other students to take exams. Sometimes they go so far as to bribe and threaten professors. These are certainly not the majority of athletes but it does happen.

Another hot debate that tends to surround college athletics is that of pay. Should college athletes get paid for playing at certain schools? Those in favor claim these athletes bring in lots of money and publicity for the school. Those against claim it is a conflict of interest. They go further to argue that many students are already paid in the form of scholarships.

College athletics is always exciting. It brings something to the atmosphere of a school that nothing else can. However, every year there seem to be these same arguments. Others also develop around discipline and women’s VS men’s college athletics. Despite all of the controversy, school wouldn’t be the same without college athletics.
