Girls Athletic

Today there are so many more athletic opportunities for girls than there was years ago. In fact up until the 1960’s girls were not allowed to participate in athletics or any type of team sport. It was though that such activities were not lady like. Girls also being smaller than boys were thought frail and athletics could hurt them.

As women became more liberated, so to did the world of girl’s athletics. One of the more popular girl’s athletic events was cheerleading. This of course wasn’t a competitive sport but it did give active girls a chance to show what they were able to do.

Later on in the 70’s physical education classes and girls athletics really started to take off. Girls were playing all kinds of sports and playing them well. Girls were even playing on their own basketball and football teams in some schools.

As time moved on from there, more opportunities came about for girl athletes. Athletic scholarships were made available for girls who wanted to continue their education beyond high school. The girl’s athletic programs also became increasingly more competitive against their male counterparts.

Today girl’s athletics has grown even further. In many colleges and universities across the county the girl’s athletics programs draw as big if not bigger crowds than the boys. They win championships and have nearly as many opportunities. They still have quite a journey before they are considered equal to their male counterparts but they have come a long way in a relatively short time.

Decades ago girl’s athletics was nearly non existent. Many schools even forbid girls to take part in physical education classes at all. However, with time girl’s athletics has grown. It will likely continue to grow and become more popular. The end result will one day be girls and boys athletics being treated with an equal amount of respect.
