Hammer Throw

The hammer throw today has changed from its origins. Today a large steel ball is attached to a wire. The object as with all other throwing events is who can throw it the farthest. The name derives itself from the time when an actual hammer was thrown. The Scottish still practice this method when they perform the ancient highland games.

The hammer throw has been an official Olympic sport sine 1900. However the sport did not become recognized for women until 1995. This was the first year that their scores were marked and counted.

The hammer throw, as with other throwing events involves a technique. Both the arms and the legs work together to launch the object as far as possible. It is possible to learn the technique from a variety of settings. One way is to join a track and field club. The chances are good that they will have someone skilled in the art of Olympic hammer throwing. Many schools have track teams however for safety reasons hammer throwing may not be allowed. However if other throwing events are allowed ask the coach of those events. If they don’t know how to do hammer throw they will likely know someone who is. One final way is to buy a hammer throw video. This is less than idea but one can learn the basics and get some practice in.

Anyone interested in learning hammer throw should start soon. Generally the younger one starts an event the better. By the time one reaches adulthood the techniques will be second nature. Who knows, Olympics or professional hammer throwing may be in the cards.
