High School Track And Field

High school track and field programs face some serious problems in today’s world. Many students today simply are not interested causing schools to cut programs due to low participation levels. High school track and field programs also face expensive costs. Many times when it comes down to a choice between text books and track, high school track and field goes out the window. Finally, today’s litigious lifestyle puts high school track and field as well as other sports at risk. Most schools can not afford several multi million dollar law suits.

High school track and field programs face today’s student simply not being interested. Many are too interested in what is happening on their computers to get out and do running and jumping drills. High school track and field comes fairly late in the school year as well. By the time spring rolls around many of the schools top athletes have already worn themselves out playing football, basket ball and several of the other sports of this time of year. This lack of participation can lead to high school track and field programs being cancelled.

High school track and field programs also face high costs. Coaches need to be paid and equipment needs to be bought, replaced, repaired and upgraded. All of these things when added up make quite a dent in the schools budget. Schools that are struggling for funds may face cutting their budgets and cutting their high school track and field programs.

Finally, our society has become more and more litigious in the past few years. Schools face law suits should students become hurt while participating in their event. Even if law suits are not the issue, high insurance premiums can be an issue. Many high school track and field programs cannot take the risk of the added costs so they end up cancelled.

Despite these problems several high schools have made a great success of their track and field programs. Several California high schools have had tremendous success sending some of their athletes to international competition. Bismarck high school’s track and field program has also has several success stories. Despite all of the problems high school track and field face it shows that great things are still very possible.
