Relay Race

Relay races are a great exercise for children to learn. They encourage the idea of working together as a team and strategy. A relay race is a race run by several people. A team of usually 3 or 4 members runs a distance that is equally divided up amongst the team members. The team members need to decide the running order according to running ability. The quickest runners typically go first and last with the slower runners in between.

Some relay races just involve a touch of the hand or passing a certain point to signal the start of the next runner. However, one of the more well known types of relay races are those that use a baton. In baton relay races the runner must successfully pass the baton to the next runner before they begin their leg of the race. This involves a fair amount of skill if it is to be done correctly. Mistakes can result in the baton being dropped and precious seconds being wasted.

It isn’t difficult to learn how to run a relay race. Most schools in the country teach this as a part of their physical education programmes. As the children get older they will have the option of participating in the track and field teams. They can perfect their relay race techniques here and actually compete. Those who want to learn to run relay races well are advised to stat young. This tends to bring about the best results.

Relay races are not just for competition and sport. There are unusual relay races that people do quite often for charities. These are incredibly wide ranging from three legged relay races to pillow relays.
