Road Running

Many of us watched the famous cartoon as children. Some us hoped that just once the Coyote would catch the road runner. Road running however isn’t the art of out running highly determined animated characters. It involved running or jogging set distances over roads and streets. This differs to cross country running or race walking.

Road running is a highly popular form of exercise. Nearly anyone can do it, improve and get physically fit. No special equipment is needed except a good quality pair of running shoes and comfortable clothes. A safe stretch of road is also recommended to practice on.

Road running competitions are highly varied. Most range between 5-10k. However there are longer stretches of road consisting of half marathons, full marathons and ultra races. Those that are truly insane and addicted can join the marathon a day competition.

Road running offers several health advantages. It is great for the heart and increases lung capacity. It also tones the body especially those in the legs. It helps raise the metabolism and burns calories and fat. One of the most effective forms of exercise for those wanting to shed the pounds is to start road running. It is something that anyone can start at any age. However, those that are over 50 should consult a doctor and a trainer for a good gradual program.

Road running does have a few disadvantages. It can be very hard on the joints and knees. To minimalise this, good running shoes are needed. They need to be checked and replaced quite frequently. Road running can also damage muscle tissue. One should incorporate a light weight program to keep muscle tissue solid. Stretching before and after a run can also help reduce the chances of injury.

Road running is one of the most popular sports today. It is easy to do and nearly everyone can participate at some level. Road running helps people keep fit and shed unwanted pounds. Road running can be hard on the body. However the risks can be made minimal with good shoes, form and stretching.
