Track And Field Events

The spring and summer months are usually the time for track and field events. High schools and colleges begin competitions usually in late April to early may. Most of the events are help outside so milder temperatures and weather is often an indicator to whether or not and event takes place.

Track and field events are usually performed in a track meet competition. The events performed on the track are usually the running events while the throwing; Jumping and agility events are the field competitions. Track and field events are highly varied. They involve people of all abilities, body types and strengths. Those that are fast can compete in the sprint races, those that are slower but can run long distances can compete in the long distance running events. Finally those that don’t run at all but favor strength and agility can compete in the field events.

Many high schools sponsor track teams. They are a good way to get a large portion of the student body interested in sports. Nearly anyone can find an event to compete and improve upon.

Track and field events have a long history. Some of the events have origins in Greek and Roman times. The discus throwing and shot put were all performed in the ancient Greek Olympic Games. The Javelin has its origins in ancient hunting rituals and the hammer throw from the highlands of Scotland. These events have changes over the decades but some of their original form still exists.

Getting involved in track and field events is quite simple. The easiest way is to get involved at school. If the local school does not have a track and field program then looks to the community. There is bound to be something locally for any who are interested.

Track and field events are fun and exciting. They are also a wonderful way to get youngsters involved in sports straining. Many of the track and field events have their roots in antiquity either through competition or hunting. To get involved is easy but to stay involved requires discipline.
